About the event
No experience needed. All stitching is by hand. Ages [16+]. Boro and sashiko began in rural Japan, where cloth was precious and nothing was wasted. Garments were patched and re-patched by hand across generations, and the mending became the beauty.
In this beginner-friendly class, you'll learn a little about where these traditions come from and see samples from simple to intricate. You'll practice patching over and under a hole using boro and sashiko on scrap fabric. Then you'll bring your own creativity to a piece from your wardrobe. We'll get started together in class, and you'll leave with the skills to finish it at home.
Bring: a cotton or linen item that has a hole, a thin spot, or just wants some stitching. A T-shirt, linen shirt, or jeans all work. Denim is great, and non-stretch works best. You're welcome to bring fabric you love for patches too.
Provided: sashiko needles and thread,…
